The complex was designed by the famous architectural firm “Foster + Partners”, challenging market Ukrainian fabricators of steel structures. PJSC “Ukrstalkonstruktsiya” became the absolute winner of the whole complex of works connected with steel structures in competition with leading companies. Thereby the company has confirmed its qualification and accumulated years of experience in solving non-standard tasks, that are back-breaking for the stakeholders of Ukrainian market of steel construction.

To design complex geometric shapes, make curved in the form of petals plant structural elements and then set them on the atrium of 30 meter deep – it’s not all solutions that could make a reality of the implementation of this ambitious project.

The main task and the first stage of the project was the question of steel structures calculation and design in order to repeat bending in the three planes of the roof contour. There are 400 tons of steel frame steel structures in total, but each element was individual. Only accurate drawings and carefully organized fabrication process could provide their full assemblability on erection site.

This problem was solved by Design Bureau of PJSC “Ukrstalkonstruktsiya” with the use of software systems SCAD and Tekla Structures which allow to analyze and take into account every detail.

The roof in the form of petals has been split into 5 units for expedition of construction and the possibility of a parallel producibility of other types of construction works. The whole volume of steel structures was divided among the three plants, are part of PJSC “Ukrstalkonstruktsiya”. It has provided the deadlines of fabrication herewith restored from the confusion between dispatching names of each of the blocks. The bulk of structures was fabricated at Dnipropetrovsk Structural Steel Plant named after I. V. Babushkin. Zhytomyr Structural Steel Plant and Metallist Experimental and Mechanic Plant were called to help.

Load bearing elements of the roof were fabricated sections of closed section and l-shaped cross-section and also trusses with upper chord from radial welded girders of l-shaped cross-section.

Moreover, all available node points for visual inspection have been designed with concealed joints in order do not violate the laconicalness of architectural style.

It is known that it would be impossible to provide such geometrical configuration using a different direct material than steel structures. Their erection was another test of strength for Ukrstalmontazh Construction Company which is installer of PJSC “Ukrstalkonstruktsiya” group of companies. It was more than meets the eye to connect thousands the curved, different from each other, elements in a single entire system in contrary winter weather conditions. But the company has successfully licked a problem using through the “gap” method of the erection procedure over 18 m in width on temporary supports and bridges.

According to CEO of PJSC “Ukrstalkonstruktsiya” Vladimir Nosov success in this project was achieved thanks to the closure of all the work related to steel structures within the company. It allowed to avoid timing and resource spend on cooperation different subcontractors and also provided the full assemblability of steel structures and excluded the erection errors.
