New pedestrian bridge from UKRSTAL CONSTRUCTION for Natalka Park

The new bridge connects the park on Pryrichna, Obolonsky Island and the Wave Bridge (UKRSTAL KONSTRUKTSIA manufactured and installed a set of metal structures for the arch and pedestrian zone).

UKRSTAL СONSTRUСTION team reveals the lightning-fast story of the creation of the new bridge.

The length of the pedestrian part of the bridge is 24 meters, the width is about 4 meters. On the sides of the bridge there are two arches, installed in such a way that at one end of the bridge they rest on the foundations outside the pedestrian zone, and at the other end they enter the inside of the bridge, in order to achieve authenticity with their congener bridge in Vilnius.

The final location of the future bridge was determined personally by the mayor of Kyiv as a result of several working meetings at the site, when the optimal turn towards the island was chosen, which opens the best view of the landscape.

For the construction of this rather complex and responsible engineering structure, the necessary design calculations were carried out, because the main artistic idea was to achieve the minimum thickness of the bridge in order to perceive its lightness and elegance, but at the same time the bridge had to comply with all current standards in the country. The arches are spacers and rest on deep pile foundations. A feature is that the arches have a variable cross-section along the length of the bridge and are turned in plan relative to the bridge axis at an angle of 2.5°, but at the same time the arches have, in addition to their own weight, to partially bear the weight of the span of the pedestrian zone.

To develop the KM and KMD (workshop) drawings,  UKRSTAL specialists from design department used BIM and Tekla Structures technologies, which allowed them to produce the pedestrian part and arch structures with high quality, with step-by-step control, and to carry out control assembly, so that such post-operational monitoring would ensure assembly and quick installation for the timely opening of the bridge.

Our bridge-building plant UKRSTAL ZHYTOMYR in a short time (the full production cycle was carried out in 21 days), with the highest quality and accuracy, produced bridge metal structures of both the pedestrian zone and the guardrail, as well as both arches. When developing the KM and KMD bridge structures, we pre-planned and laid the guardrail fastening on bolts for accurate and quick installation, and also developed a decorative lighting system with LED strips with a power supply system for the guardrail and bridge span.

Construction works - installation of the pile field, production of reinforced concrete frame, installation of the sub-concrete and monolithic works, installation of the main and auxiliary structures, assembly and welding work on the installation, with the installation of the lighting and power supply system, decoration and installation of decorative elements, such as logs, terrace composite board and wooden railings - was performed by our construction division UKRSTALMONTAZH.

The installation of the main metal structures was carried out in stages: first, using a 200-ton crane, the installation of the main structures of the pedestrian zone was successfully completed in one lift, then one by one the arches were installed, docked and pulled to the design position, and as a result, the half-arches were welded on one side and then on the other. Thanks to UKRSTALMONTAZH many years of experience in bridge construction and the skills of the workers and engineering and technical staff of UKRSTAL ZHYTOMYR, all the manufactured structures were clearly placed in the design position and were finally assembled and welded, the supporting rods and railings were connected and welded.

The bridge lighting, installed by the power engineers of UKRSTAL CONSTRUCTION, is of particular complexity, because the installation of all LED, cable-mounting elements, power supplies had to be harmoniously and reliably combined with the outdoor lighting and the electrical network of the park, but at the same time remain invisible and safe for citizens. That is why our power engineers, together with the designers, developed a separate technology and laid a special backlight (LED tape with a total length of more than 100 meters) on the entire bridge, enclosed in an aluminum profile from below the handrails and from below the pedestrian part. Therefore, the Vilnius Bridge can compete in terms of brightness with its older brother - the Wave Bridge.

Throughout the two months of painstaking work, the Kyiv City State Administration provided comprehensive support to the construction. The Mayor of Kyiv and his deputies regularly visited the construction site, inspired the builders to conscientiously work together and achieve labor achievements for the sake of our citizens, for whom a completely new location with its unique atmosphere is being created, which will allow everyone to get away from everyday life, get new impressions and restore spiritual strength thanks to the unique energy of this place.

The work was carried out almost without weekends (as local residents could see for themselves many times) and was completed in just two months. On June 23, 2026, Vilnius Square and the pedestrian bridge on Pryrichna Street were solemnly opened. They became an integral harmonious part of the Park complex.
